One of the most common (and sometimes messy!) tasks in herbal magick is preparing your herbs. Enter the grinder, a super useful tool for transforming leaves, barks, and flowers into a finer form. Twist-and-turn grinders are a simple and effective solution, keeping everything contained within the tool. This is perfect for dried herbs and spices like clove, cinnamon, mint, or holy basil, allowing you to easily add them to spells, sachets, or ceremonial incense.
But what if your magickal concoction calls for more than just finely ground herbs? This is where the mortar and pestle step in. This classic tool duo – a bowl (mortar) and club-shaped grinder (pestle) – allows you to create a more intricate mix. It's perfect for tasks like:
The choice of material matters too. Heavier mortars are ideal for tougher ingredients, while wooden versions are gentler for delicate herbs.
Steeped in history, the cauldron goes beyond its culinary origins. Dating back to the Bronze Age, this versatile vessel has been used for centuries in magickal practices. Symbolizing the Divine Feminine, it's a powerful tool for herbal witches. Cast iron cauldrons, being heat-safe, are particularly useful for burning herbs and incense. In combination with a charcoal disc, cauldrons can be used for:
When using a cauldron with heat, remember to add sand or salt to the bottom for protection. For an extra magickal touch, try using salt – once the cauldron cools, you can create your own black salt concoction!
Every witch, herbal or otherwise, should record their magickal journey. This is where the Book of Shadows comes in. It's your personal space to document your experiences, spells, and herbal discoveries. Your Book of Shadows can be as simple as a digital folder on your phone, or a beautifully bound journal filled with handwritten notes. The key is finding a system that works for you and allows you to easily access and reflect on your herbal magickal practice.
With these essential tools by your side, you're well on your way to harnessing the power of plants and weaving them into your unique brand of herbal magick. So, grab your grinder, unleash the mortar and pestle, and light the fire beneath your cauldron – it's time to embark on your verdant magickal adventure!
Stay magickal,

Eclipse season begins a week after this New Moon, and it’s the perfect time for manifestation and using the Moon’s energy in your magick. The Moon is closer to Earth now and is technically a Super Moon. Although we won’t visually see that full power until the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse comes up on March 25, we’ll be feeling the effects now. Use the Moon’s power to help you pursue what lights you up inside.
Any time the sun and moon meet in a water sign, like Pisces, we can feel more sensitive to our own emotions and those of others. Empathy is a wonderful thing, and it’s essential to take care of yourself too. Use this time to get creative as you explore those wildest dreams I was talking about. Uranus might inspire you to dive into your passions even more, so if you get swept up in them, step outside, ground yourself in nature, and dance with Mother Earth a bit.
Here's what to be on the lookout for based on your Sun and Rising Signs:
Pisces Sun/Rising Signs: You’re at home in this New Moon, so make sure to stand in your personal power. Pisces can be inclined to people-please. Remember that you get to call the shots in your own life.
Scorpio, Cancer, Aries, Taurus, Aquarius, and Capricorn Sun/Rising Signs: Start something new and be on the lookout for unexpected results! You may have the opportunity to enjoy the “scenic route” to your goal.
Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Leo, and Libra Sun/Rising Signs: Use your insight into other people’s motivations and emotions to your advantage this month. Allow others to make up their mind about what’s best for their lives but use your discernment to choose what’s best for your life.
Happy New Moon, witches!
Stay magickal,
Megan W.
The Earth’s orbit around the sun is technically 365.2422 days. Every four years, we’re given an extra day to balance out the calendar and reset it. If we just threw that 1/4 of a day each year and never made up for it, eventually, the seasons would shift, and it would mess up our harvesting and planting schedules, so it’s pretty important.
In fact, Hebrew, Chinese, and Buddhist calendars all contain Leap Days, and Julius Caeser is credited with adding a Leap Day to the calendar, but really, he just stole it from the Egyptians, who had a 365-day solar calendar with a Leap Day every four years.
Leap Day is a day primed for you to shoot for the moon, take a leap of faith, begin something exciting, go on an adventure, or add some “extra” to your life and pamper yourself a bit. It gives you an extra day to get shit done, do something out of the norm, or an extra day to be extra!
You can also view it as a hidden day, since it stays hidden for three years and pops up in year 4. Lost-and-found spells are great for Leap Day. You can also use the day to reveal hidden talents, reveal hidden secrets, or bury secrets even deeper until the next Leap Day, four years from now.
Spells that help you gain clarity on a decision you need to make or find out more information about something you want to explore are two more options for practicing magick on Leap Day.
When you add 2 + 9, you get 11, which is actually a master number. It’s associated with greater power, potential, truth, intention, and spirituality. All these energies can be accessed more easily on Leap Day!
You could lean into this energy by practicing divination or meditation, such as card pulls, meeting with your guides or higher self for messages, and dream magick. Pay attention to your dreams, as that’s where messages from the spirit world and your higher self tend to come through.
Focus on your long-term goals and ideas. This goes hand-in-hand with taking that leap of faith for Leap Day. Take a step back and see if there’s a leap or plan you can take.
Amplifying your spells or practices is another excellent way to tap into the energy of Leap Day.
It’s also a great day to reset yourself or your energy since the day actually resets the calendar!
Leap Day is also considered a liminal space, almost like an extra day between space and time. Since it’s this in-between space, it’s a great day for astral travel, spirit communication, and working fairy magick. The veil is a little thinner on Leap Day, too; not as thin as Samhain or Beltane, but thinner than most days.
And Leap Day is considered a lucky day! If you make a good luck charm on Leap Day, it will have more energy and magick.
Here’s a simple way to tap into the energies of Leap Day. Start by pulling the Fool card from any tarot deck. It’s the leap of faith card – he’s taking a journey and doesn’t really know what to expect. Set the card on your altar so you can sit in front of it. What you’re going to do is sit before it and meditate.
In front of the card – far enough way so nothing catches fire – light a mini candle or tea light. Use a yellow one for focus or intuitive wisdom, or a purple candle for divine guidance or spirituality. A white candle is just fine if you don’t have either color.
Relax and get comfortable. Start staring at the candle flame; you’ll begin to relax as you gaze at it. You’ll still see the Fool card behind it, and the two will become one. This is when you’ll relax enough to enter a meditative state and open yourself for guidance.
You can ask a question beforehand, such as, “What are the messages I need to receive right now?” Of course, cast a circle and protect yourself first.
Write down anything you receive: images, words, full-on instructions for your next step, or beyond. If nothing comes to you, that’s ok. Pay attention to the synchronicities around you over the next few days – that could be your guides communicating with you!
Remember, Leap Day brings us greater power and potential. Use the energy to tap into your higher self!
Stay magickal,
Megan W.
Virgo encourages us to purge the things that don’t serve us. As the symbol of strength, wellness, and independence, Virgo reminds us to listen within and embrace the call to do the work that we’ve been put on this earth to do. As a reminder, that purposeful work may be different than the work you do to pay your bills. Of the zodiac signs, Virgo understands this necessity more than most. At the same time, pay attention to things that are nagging you – the energies or tasks that you’d love to be free from as we move further into the year. It might be a sign that change is coming your way.
Now’s a great time to lean into Virgo’s vibe. Finish a project that’s been taking a while to complete, tie up relationship loose ends, and allow Virgo’s logical side to help you make good decisions for yourself.
With the moon opposite the sun in Pisces, this Full Moon will encourage you to consider how you can love yourself and others more. Use the Virgo love of organization and structures to create a new self-care routine for yourself. Just make sure it’s practical and sustainable – those are the energies that Virgo thrives on. Mercury and Saturn are also in opposition to the moon right now, so there may be a little tension between what you desire and what reality supports. Just take some time to allow things to percolate.
Mercury may reveal something to you during this Full Moon, or you may finally have that conversation you’ve been putting off. Saturn may encourage you to be a little more mature in your goal setting. On February 28th, the sun, Mercury, and Saturn will converge at the same degree of Pisces, giving us another little boost of magickal energy.
We’re also experiencing an alignment of Venus, Mars, and Jupiter, which will remind us to focus on the collective. It’s an excellent time to take action on your plans for social justice, activism, or charity work.
In a few days, when we move past the Full Moon, release the thought patterns that bring you down or make you think less of yourself. Use discernment and close out chapters that don’t support you – just be sure not to act too quickly. Virgo loves a practical plan, after all!
Virgo Sun and Rising placements: Reflect on your previous New Moon from September 2023. What’s been working for you? What needs some refinement? How can you continue to improve?
Taurus, Capricorn, Leo, Libra, Cancer, and Scorpio Sun and Rising placements: Precision is essential during this Full Moon. Be super specific about what your wants and needs. Now’s a good time to refocus on your physical and mental wellness, too.
Sagittarius, Pisces, Gemini, Aries, and Aquarius Sun and Rising placements: Watch out for people pushing your buttons and your boundaries during this Full Moon. You might feel a little more sensitive right now. Remember, alone time is a good time!
Stay magickal,
Megan W.
Candle magick, ritual baths, and herbal spells are familiar to most of us in the magickal community, so let’s examine some spells that use a container as part of the casting process. Hopefully one or more will be new for you and will enhance your practice!
Envelope Spells are a simple way to perform magick. Pick an envelope color that matches your intention. Decorate it with symbols, sigils, or whatever you like. You can also leave it plain. Insert items and add your intention.
Use gemstone chips, herbs, personal items, or images that reflect what you want to manifest. Use a wax color that matches the intention, and carefully seal the envelope. Place the envelope on your altar, somewhere out of sight, safely burn it, or bury it to let it do its work.
Also called Witch Bottles, Jar Spells date back to 17th century England. They began as protection FROM witches, filled with items such as herbs, nails, thorns, and even urine. They were buried in the walls or underneath the hearth of a home to ward off dark magick.
Today, witch bottles and jars can be used as a tool for any kind of spell. After cleansing the container, place herbs, stones, talismans, and personal effects that resonate with your intention inside the container. Seal the bottle with candle wax and, if you’d like to, place a charm around the jar or bottle to designate its energy. Store it away, out of sight, or bury it to work its magick.
To cast a bag spell, you’ll need a bag to begin. Choose it based on its material and color. For instance, velvet is a great material for abundance spells, while flannel is a thick material for heavier ingredients. If you choose to create your own bag, speak your intentions or visualize your magick over the stitches as you sew. If you’re a Busy Witch, readymade is just fine!
Depending on your intention, add items, gemstones, and personal effects to the bag. Tie it a few times, infusing each knot with your purpose. Add a charm to the outside if you’d like, and carry the bag with you on your person, handbag, or tote.
A knot spell is a straightforward spell used to focus your energy for a particular intention. It can be used for any spell. Choose a cord, string, or small bit of rope that you can easily tie knots into. The cord should measure at least 9 inches long. The color of the cord can match your intention, or a white cord can be used for any spell.
You will tie 9 knots into the cord, and with each knot, say the line of the spell for that knot. Visualize your intention becoming a reality. When you’re finished, carry the knot spell with you, bury it, or keep it on your altar to help manifest it!
Mirror boxes are helpful for spell reversals or curses. To practice this kind of spell, cleanse your mirror first. From now on, once you have cleansed the mirror, do not look into it! Write the name of your enemy BACKWARDS on a piece of paper. Gather a personal item, graveyard dirt, baneful herbs, talismans, or other items to add to the box.
Light a black, reversing, or hexing candle on top of or near the box (make sure it’s safely placed to avoid fires). Add items to the box. Infuse the mirror with energy that the energy your enemy has cast toward you will return to them, or recite your own curse or spell. When you are done, close the box, tie it shut, and bury it outside – preferably in a graveyard. Do not look back at the box once you bury it.
Which type of spell are you excited to try?
Stay magickal,
Megan W.
Aquarius also supports us in breaking old patterns, challenging authority, and carving new paths in our lives. The Sun and Moon are currently close to Saturn. With this closeness, Saturn will ask you to commit to what’s important to your soul. Are you following your soul’s purpose and your authentic desires?
What’s your personal truth? Use Aquarius’ rebellious energy to distinguish between what you want and what society or your family might want for you.
Uranus, the planet of revolution, rules Aquarius. The Moon square Uranus in Taurus may cause tension when you break old patterns between earthy Taurus and airy Aquarius. Consider if you’re hanging onto old habits out of familiarity and a sense of predictability. If so, it may be time to release them, and Taurus’ grounded energy will help you do that without feeling too unsure. Remember, Aquarius and Uranus are all about starting fresh and navigating change, so try to go with the flow if change is particularly scary for you.
Stretch your creativity and imagination with this month’s New Moon Intentions. Reach for a new vision and release your self-imposed limitations. Your intentions are powerful, witch! You are unique and magickal – lean into these truths and bring forth something that feels completely different, whether in your professional or personal life.
For those with Sun and Rising signs in Aquarius, ask, and you shall receive – it may just not look like you thought it would. Be patient with those around you. You’ll move much faster and more easily during this New Moon.
Sun and Rising Signs in Cancer, Virgo, Taurus, Scorpio, and Leo: Look out for frivolous spending, and if this moon makes you feel a little “meh,” that’s ok. The feeling will pass!
For those with Sun and Rising signs in Sagittarius, Capricorn, Pisces, Aries, Libra, and Gemini, simplify your life by removing stuff, drama, or dramatic people from your circle.
Stay Magickal,
Megan W.
We talk a lot about spells here at IGC, whether we include one in our monthly IGC Boxes, or you’ve purchased a spell kit for a specific intention. Spells have three main components: ritual (even if it’s short), ingredients/tools, and magick words.
Magick words have been a part of our collective cultures for thousands of years, varying across time and space. Some of the more familiar ones include Abracadabra and Hocus Pocus. Some magick words, or rather incantations, were used to banish demons. Others were used to coax a snake from a hiding place by snake charmers or served as protection on the battlefield. My favorite is the Fairy Godmother’s “bibbidi-bobbidi-boo!”
We create a spell through a combination of ritual, spell ingredients or tools, and magick words. Your words don’t have to rhyme, we just like them that way here at IGC. Your spell crafting can be elaborate or quick – between work and dinner time – if that’s when you have time. Remember, YOU are the magick.
All enchantments are spells, but not all spells are enchantments. You can enchant a piece of jewelry for glamour magick or your front door to protect the home from unwanted guests. You’ll use some sort of spell or ritual to do this, even if the spell is a simple one-line intention you speak in your mind.
The word “enchant” comes from the Latin word “incantare” – you can tell the word “incantation” also comes from this Latin term – and means to consecrate with spells.
Enchantments can also extend to creating charms and talismans for protection, fertility, abundance, and beyond.
The easiest way to enchant an item is to set your space with intention, hold the item in your dominant hand, and speak your intention or spell over it. Imagine that power and intention infusing into the physical elements of the item. While you can take a more elaborate approach to enchantments, I find this is the one that’s most compatible with a Busy Witch lifestyle!
When you’re not wearing or carrying the item, place it on or near a piece of selenite to cleanse it of negative energy between uses.
Happy spell casting & enchanting!
Megan
For Morgan, Owner of Inked Goddess Creations, the answer was a little bit of a challenge, but she finally settled on Sarah from “The Craft.”
“At the time I first watched ‘The Craft’ as a teenager, I didn’t know I was a witch, but I knew I was different. When Sarah is first telling the others about how weird things happen to her, I completely understood where she was coming from. I loved how down-to-earth she was and how much power she had below the surface. It was wonderful watching her tap into her magick and own it. That really inspired me to do the same.”
“She’s an unassuming badass. She’s nurturing and caring to the baby witches, sharing her knowledge and helping them grow. When needed, she rose up like a phoenix from under her mother and took control, showing what a badass she really was, when no one expected her to.” ~ Meghan A.
“She’s my favorite pop culture witch because she remains optimistic through all adversity, maintains a kind heart, and rolls with the punches. She doesn’t start out with magickal powers at all, but through her struggles finds the magick within her.” ~ Renee
“She tries to ‘do no harm,’ but she definitely ‘takes no shit.’ She’s a total badass and highly protective of those she loves – and she loves HARD. That also sets her up for heartache, but that’s the price we pay. She’s a trailblazer on a path no one thought could exist, but there she goes, kicking ass and taking names.” ~ Angela
And finally, I’ve got to include my favorite, Sally from “Practical Magic.” I was always so captivated by her desire to hide her magick, to live a normal life. I think I’ve always felt like an outsider, and I could sense that in her, too. But, of course, when she activates her magick, she’s freaking powerful. I love that she does anything for her family – even when it’s slightly misguided, like when they tried to bring Jimmy back – and I mean, who wouldn’t love her little shop?
Now it’s your turn. Share this blog post on your favorite social media platform, tag us, and share your favorite pop culture witch!
Stay Magickal,
Megan

Due to this Full Moon's alignment with Pluto, which entered Aquarius on January 20th, you may find that you are able to uncover some hidden talents within yourself. Explore your abilities and share them with the world, if you feel called to do so. A huge transformational shift is in the works now, so if you open yourself to this energy, and be honest and genuine with yourself about who you are and what you love, then the change Pluto has in store for you will be a positive one!
This Leo Full Moon also encourages you to meet with your inner child, listen to them, and begin to heal any wounds they have. Being creative through music, dance, or art can be such a healing experience and a way for you to tap into your inner flame and ignite it! This Full Moon urges you to find what you are passionate about and figure out how to make that more of a part of your daily life.
Happy Full Moon in Leo!

]]>If you’ve watched Supernatural, you know that all the witches portrayed in the show are evil. They also only work by using hex bags. Now, I’m not saying that there aren’t any evil witches out there, but I am saying that most witches are kind, nature-loving people who want to make the world better.
Witches also don’t possess other people or jump bodies like in The Originals!
Charmed is such a fun show…and so inaccurate! I fell in love with Piper from the beginning of the show. I really wanted her time-freezing power, but that’s not something real witches can do. Also, blowing things up, time travel, teleportation, and any of the other big cinematic moments only happen in entertainment.
Oh, yeah, and scrying never looks or acts like it does in Charmed either!
My favorite witchy movie is definitely Practical Magic, and there are several kind of accurate elements in it. However, when the sisters bring Jimmy back to life…well, nothing about that except for the whipped cream is accurate. Most of us witches will substitute ingredients when we don’t have the ones the spell calls for!
If only we could all have the wardrobe of some of these witches. I’m thinking about the Coven witches, in particular, who look completely badass strolling the streets of the French Quarter. However, in New Orleans, you’re only likely to see folks dressed like that at carnival times or while leading haunted tours.
Most of us witches wear “normal” clothes: jeans, dresses, t-shirts, etc. Think more Sally Owens and less Fiona Goode.
And unfortunately, not all of us are as musically and dance-inclined as the Sanderson Sisters! The list goes on, but the one thing we can all agree on is how great it is to see witches of all sorts in cinema and television. Who’s your favorite pop culture witch?
Stay Magickal,
Megan
Capricorn energy is structured and disciplined, so this New Moon in Capricorn will help you create a structured space for your intentions to grow. You may feel compelled to look at your daily routine and shake it up a bit, letting go of practices that no longer work for you and creating new practices that fit who you want to become. In order to achieve your goals, you need to make sure you have regular time dedicated to visualizing them becoming reality. This is easily done by infusing magick into your morning or evening routines through meditation, journaling, visualizing your intentions manifesting, or practicing gratitude magick as you achieve small goals along the way. Capricorn energy will help motivate you to achieve your goals, so go with the flow of this energy, see where it leads you, and don't be afraid to try new ways of doing things.
This New Moon in Capricorn is also filled with the energy of rebirth and transformation as we slowly approach Aquarius season on the 20th. Now is the time to look at the road behind you, honor your past, and see how far you've already come on your journey. What fears come up for you when you turn your focus to the future? Are these fears holding you back from reaching your potential? These are wonderful questions to explore under this Capricorn New Moon!
Happy New Moon in Capricorn!
Blessings,
Morgan
A dirty witch isn’t evil, and she isn’t Miss Goodie Two Shoes. Instead, she’s human. She’s real. She embraces the fact that she wants to do good in the world and sometimes has to throw down a hard and fast boundary to protect herself. Keep reading!
As you embrace your dirty witch side, you’ve got to put yourself first sometimes. I know, as women, we tend to put others before ourselves – our kids, partners, pets, work, etc. But your inner dirty witch wants to remind you that you’re the most important part of your life. Without you, your life simply doesn’t work.
It’s ok to say no to things that don’t work well for you. It doesn’t make you a bad witch to put yourself first. Or to listen to your intuition, for that matter! Trust yourself and remember that you need love and care too.
Here’s another aspect your dirty witch side wants you to know: it’s ok to want. Whether you want more money, a better relationship, a more supportive boss, another dog…it’s ok to want these things. We’ve been taught not to want more than we have – and to be grateful for what we’ve got. And while we’re big on gratitude magick here at IGC, it’s also ok to want better. Just go after these desires in a way that aligns with your values and ethics, and you’ll be good to go.
Seriously, get that mess off of you and out of your space. As you become more comfortable with your dirty witch vibe, you’ll realize that cleansing yourself and your home is incredibly important. Here’s a secret: As you step more into your true self, embrace the “in-betweenness” of being a dirty witch, others will become envious and may send bad vibes your way. Let that shit go with a good cleansing as often as you need it.
And when in doubt, you can borrow my favorite dirty witch mantra: Do no harm but take no shit. You’ve got this, witch!
Blessings (and healthy boundaries!) to you,
Megan
As we are bringing a close to this year and preparing for the next, this Full Moon in Cancer helps shed light on areas of our lives where we are weighed down with emotional baggage. Now is the time to make note of these things that you wish to release so that you can do so on New Year's Eve, as a way to say goodbye to 2023 and wipe the slate clean for 2024. As you take time with this Full Moon for introspection, be sure to express your gratitude for the blessings and accomplishments of 2023, no matter how small.
You may find that your intuition and divine connection are heightened under this Full Moon. Divine messages, downloads, and inspiration are likely to occur. Pay attention to any dreams, messages, synchronicities, etc. that occur, as they may contain powerful information from your divine energy source or your higher self. The connection to your authentic self is also stronger under this Cancer Full Moon, so the more you nurture this connection, the more you bring your authentic self to the surface in a safe and loving way.
Family relationships and home life might also be a huge focus for you under this Full Moon. Be sure that you have surrounded yourself with things and people that provide comfort and nurture you. If not, it might be time to do some cord cuttings or releasings with the upcoming Waning Moon phase in a few days.
Happy Full Moon in Cancer!

Everything you’ve been doing for Christmas likely came from Yule and pagan traditions. The colors are no different. So, the colors of Yule are:
Wear these colors or add them to your home for abundance, joy, prosperity, and blessings for the new year ahead.
Likewise, your décor and altar setup can include any of the following items, which should feel familiar to you if you have also been celebrating Christmas for years.
The Evergreen is essential to Yule celebrations because it’s green all year round. It represents the ability to be strong during tough times and weathering the winter.
The Mother and Child motif also hails from pagan traditions. For Wiccans, Yule is the birth of the Oak King. And for pagans, it’s the birth of the Sun. In many traditions, you see the Goddess giving birth to the God or Mother Earth giving birth to the Sun, so you can see the connection there!
The following scents come together for blessings, abundance, and protection. Mix and match as you see fit.
Add one or more of the following gemstones to your altar, wear them throughout the season, or hold them during meditation for clarity and grounding during this hectic time of year. They’re also great for gratitude practices.
The Yule Tree and Yule Log come from ancient times. For instance, evergreen bough decorations during winter hail back to the times of ancient Romans, Celts, and Egyptians. All three societies used them to represent health, blessings, and continuing life through winter.
Natural, bright objects were often added to the tree, like candles, fruits, and berries. Dried orange garlands and cranberries are traditional Yule tree decorations, too!
Offerings to wildlife and their deities were also a tradition during this time of year. This is where we get the Yule log tradition. The actual Yule log comes from ancient Scandinavia and the Celts. They would burn logs as an offering to the gods in hopes of a bright spring and to celebrate the return of the Sun.
This is a time for celebration! We’re getting through the darkest part of the year and looking forward to the new year. We’re around family and friends and tapping into the nostalgia that comes with this time of year. Gifts and gift-giving during this time can be a form of gratitude magick.
Spells for transformation and preparing for rebirth are perfect for Yule. This is a great time to prep for Imbolc when you can celebrate your personal rebirth and renewal.
Aside from a Yule Log Cake – which is just so much easier to purchase than bake – the food at Yule really is a central feature of celebrations. This is the one sabbat we recommend spending time cooking.
Some of the best foods for Yule include root vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, parsnips, and turnips. Since we’re in a state of hibernating a little more, we’re naturally drawn to the comfort of Mother Earth. It’s also a great time for comfort food – think cakes, cookies, or “Christmas candy.”
Pull the old recipes out from your ancestors and spend time in the kitchen with your loved ones. Creating these recipes passed down from your loved ones and eating root vegetables helps remind you that you’re part of a much larger picture. It helps chase the winter blues away!
And, of course, remember that YOU bring the magick. May you have a blessed and bright Yule!
Blessings,
Megan
In order to manifest the intentions you are setting, this Sagittarius New Moon wants you to face any fears or limiting beliefs that are holding you back. Dreaming big is only half of the equation. If you don't open yourself to receive the change or expansion that is waiting for you, then it won't come to fruition. Oftentimes we are held back from welcoming new things in our lives by fear or limiting beliefs that we don't deserve our wishes and dreams. It's time to release those limiting beliefs, face those fears, bring them to the surface, and then push them to the side and take a leap of faith.
While that may seem scary, know that this Sagittarius New Moon will also instill you with a boost of courage and self-confidence to see your intentions through. Those who dream big and make bold moves are due to be rewarded with a big payoff between now and the Full Moon in Sagittarius in May 2024.
Happy New Moon in Sagittarius!
Morgan
Kick off the Yule season right with one of your favorite spells. Prosperity, gratitude, and cozy magick spells are perfect for this time of year. You can also use a Fire Magick Spell to create more warmth in your home as we approach the sabbat. Cast the following match spell if you’re pressed for time:
Instructions:
Add a little magick to your meal prep with the following ingredients and their correspondences. Cut sigils in the ingredients before adding them to your dish, or stir intentions into your recipe by going clockwise (counterclockwise to eliminate something).
Take some time to honor the goddesses of Yule. This includes:
Create a Yule log for yourself or your family using a piece of firewood or a branch from your yard. Add holly, rosemary, or cinnamon sticks to the log with ribbon. Other elements to consider are pinecones, dried cranberries, star anise, or bay leaves. Combine it with white candles as a centerpiece for your table throughout the season. Then, on Yule, burn the log (remove anything that might cause harmful fumes) along with your intentions for the new year. Preserve a segment of the log to burn with next year’s Yule log to mark the continuing ebb and flow of time.
December 5th is Krampusnacht, or “Krampus Night.” In Central Europe, Santa’s dark counterpart, Krampus, is a creature with long horns, a pointed tongue, cloven hooves, and a tail. He looks the part of a stereotypical demon! It’s theorized that he may have pagan origins and could be modeled on the Horned God. Krampus wears a basket on his back into which he stuffs naughty children, carrying them away to be punished. He also carries a bundle of switches used to whack the disobedient and frighten them into behaving. Krampus also often wears chains which may be decorated with bells.
Today, like days of old, he is celebrated with parades and bonfires on December 5th. He’s become an unlikely folk hero with a warning underlying the frivolity: No one wants to draw Krampus’s eye, lest they receive a lump of coal…or worse!
The gods want their attention, too, so take some time today to honor the gods of Yule. The following gods are associated with this time of year:
If you happen to have ice or snow on the ground, use it to cast some magick. If you don’t, freezer ice is just fine! You can “freeze” a spell gone wrong from doing more damage by placing any candle or spell remnants into a plastic bowl, covering it with water, and freezing it. If no spell remnants remain, you can write your intention for spell freezing on paper and freeze that.
You can do the same thing with your enemies to prevent them from performing magick against you. Just write their name on a piece of paper and freeze it!
Carve protective sigils into ice and keep it outside during winter or in your freezer. You can also use icicles or patches of natural ice for scrying.
Especially since it’s flu season, a healing witch bottle is an excellent choice for today’s magick. Add any of the following herbs or gemstones to your bottle and seal it with light blue, yellow, gold, pink, violet, or white wax.
Herbs for healing:
For healing gemstones, consider using:
Add magickal ingredients to your morning coffee, brew a cup of cocoa, and stir in sigils for your magickal intentions like protection, abundance, creativity, or patience with relatives arriving soon. I’ve written an entire blog on Mug Magick, so be sure to read it here for tons of ideas!
Create a simmer pot with the fruits, rinds, and herbs from around your kitchen. A lemon or orange that’s been sitting out a bit too long or an apple that’s gone a little mushy is still perfect for creating simmer pots. Obviously, you can also buy ingredients specifically for the simmer pot, but I like to help my fellow Busy Witches out with shortcuts where I can!
Use your favorite herbs or choose from the following to infuse your home with the Yule spirit:
Whether you use sound, smoke, salt, or door and floor washes, cleansing your home before the holidays is always a good idea – especially if you’ve got relatives coming into town. Use a singing bowl or bell to cleanse with sound, or turn on some high-vibe music and dance with it through each room.
Smoke cleanses with your favorite herbs can help clear the energy, too, or replace the salt in the bowls in your home before you greet guests. Listen to your intuition or ask your guides for assistance when choosing the best method.
On the final day of Witchmas, take some time to journal about your vision for the New Year. What went well this year, and what do you hope to accomplish next year? What are you grateful for as we close out the year? What are your intentions for Yule and the other wintertime holidays? Set some intentions and do some research on how you can activate those intentions next year.
And as always, remember that YOU are the magick.
Happy Witchmas, witches!
Love,
Megan
Gemini energy is thirsty for knowledge, so you can use this Full Moon to dive deeper into a subject you've always wanted to learn. Be open to learning and the flow of information around you, as sometimes divine messages are sent through unlikely sources. Remain open-minded during this Full Moon, and you may just find answers to big-picture questions that you've had for a while. You may also realize that you've had the answers inside of you this whole time, and it's time for you to trust that inner voice more.
This Full Moon could also shed light on triggers for you, but understand that this is to help you heal and learn from them so that you can overcome them and take away their power. Limiting beliefs, fears, worries, and even traumas might pop up for you, but Gemini's energy is there to help you break through them and set yourself free. Don't be surprised if you are also shown where you hold yourself back in life. It's time to step out of your own way so you can move forward with achieving the goals you deserve.
Blessings,
Morgan
Grapevine wreaths are especially magickal. Grapes have long been associated with attracting abundance and prosperity wherever they are planted. Wine, made from grapes, is thought to be the juice of the gods, so the grape has been associated with divine energy since the ancient world.
Grapevines, as carriers of grapes, have these same magickal properties. Adorning your altar or sacred space with a grapevine wreath will invite riches of both the spirit and the heart, attracting prosperous outcomes to the area you’ve decorated with it. Add other elements, flowers, herbs, and decorations for specific intentions, too.
Grapevines are also symbolically associated with branching out of your comfort zone and embracing the flow of life. The vine reminds us that we are all connected and share the same space in the world. How wonderful is that?
Yule logs are a great way to celebrate the sabbat and start a new family tradition in your home. The tradition hails from the ancient Scandinavians and Celts, who burned felled trees at Yuletime to honor their gods for blessings through the harsh winter.
For a modern adaptation, the Yule log is adorned with green and red ribbons or other decorations and is burned at Yule to symbolize the blazing forth of the Divine Child. You can attach notes of bad habits or things you would not like to carry into the New Year and watch them burn in the fire, simulating them burning out of your life. You can also attach resolutions or things you would like to accomplish in the New Year, and as the log burns, so will the flame of motivation and inspiration.
Make sure to keep a small portion of the log as a lucky amulet for the upcoming year. Place it in your home for prosperity and protection, and burn it along with next year’s Yule log to represent the continuation of all things.
Dressing a candle is an easy and quick witchy craft to create if you’re a busy witch. Simply take a candle – whether it’s a votive, jar candle, tea light, or 7-Day candle – and add oils and herbs to it. Below are some suggestions for dressing your candles, but before we get there, always supervise dressed candles closely. The oils and herbs may pop, spark, or jump from the candle.
Busy Witch Hack: One of the safest ways to dress a candle is to pull a tea light out of its little cup and add the ingredients under the candle itself!
Here are herbs and oils for your candle magick:
Just as you can weave intentions into wreaths, you can incorporate magickal intentions into your crochet stitches. For instance, if you’re creating a blanket for a new baby in the family, you can infuse the blanket with intentions for health, protection, and easy sleep. The design doesn’t have to be recognizably magickal either, so this is a great way to gift someone with magick without overtly sharing your witchiness.
I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to cozy up with all these crafts!
Blessings,
Megan
]]>This New Moon could bring to light some new information for you that was previously hidden in the shadows. Scorpio energy wants to help you uncover hidden mysteries- whether about yourself or others, and the best way to do that is to ask questions. Question what you have been told in the past, limiting beliefs you currently hold, or ideas that you may have outgrown. Scorpio energy urges you to be your most authentic self, so bring that version to the surface during this New Moon so that you can move forward in life.
Scorpio is highly intuitive, so you could find that your intuition and psychic abilities are heightened under this New Moon. Take some time to connect with your spiritual self and ask them what they need from you. Meditate, practice divination, perform magick, connect with your higher self or deities- do whatever it is that makes your witchy or spiritual self feel fulfilled. In fact, this Scorpio New Moon helps you focus on what fulfills you the most- passion projects, creative endeavors, pleasurable activities- so that you can set goals centered around them.
Blessings,
Morgan
Here are some suggestions for making some mug magick.
Sometimes, practicing busy witch magick is as easy as adding an ingredient or two to your mug. One of my favorite ways to add magick to my morning coffee is to stir sigils into the liquid using a cinnamon stick. Cinnamon is protective and healing, and invites prosperity into our lives. It’s also delicious in black tea if you’re not a coffee drinker.
Here are some other ingredients to add to your coffee or tea to make your beverage even more magickal!
Cocoa is a wonderful way to practice mug magick as the cocoa powder, milk, and sugar blend brings comfort on a chilly day. Cocoa and chocolate inspire romance and love. However, you can add other ingredients to your hot brew for different energies, such as:
Another busy witch hack for mug magick is to pick up ready-made tea blends or create your own for different magickal purposes. Here are some ideas:
Here are other herbs and spices to look out for when shopping for tea blends – or creating your own!
Which ingredients will you use in your next mug magick ritual?
Many cozy blessings,
Megan
Understand that eclipses are often seen as cosmic gateways, offering you the opportunity to release old patterns, beliefs, and emotional baggage. This sometimes only occurs by shaking things up a bit, as change generally doesn't come when times are easy. Full Moon eclipses help shed further light on areas of your life kept in the dark. Information could be revealed during this Full Moon eclipse that helps you transform some part of yourself or your life. With this celestial event occurring in Taurus, it encourages you to confront your attachments and relationships and find a sense of security within yourself. It's a time to embrace change and possible endings, let go of the past, and set the stage for a more harmonious and prosperous future.
Taurus, known for its earthy and sensual qualities, brings a sense of grounding and practicality to this lunar eclipse, making it one of the more comforting eclipses. It encourages you to connect more with your physical body and pleasures, your environment, and the material world. The energy of the Full Blood Moon in Taurus opposite the Sun in Scorpio is all about striking a balance between the tangible/physical and the spiritual/emotional aspects of your existence. What good is all of the hard work if you don't enjoy the benefits?
Blessings,
Morgan
The colors for Samhain are really easy! They’re the traditional Halloween colors we’re all familiar with:
Honestly, just think Halloween! Samhain’s symbols were adopted, and adapted, by people over the years for Halloween. So, gather some of these items:
We’re still in pumpkin spice latte season, so continue to enjoy your favorite PSL for Samhain. Here are the other scents, herbs, and oils that are perfect for this time of year:
The gemstones for Samhain all have the same orange and black theme as the colors and decorations. Here are some gemstones to help you get started:
The energy of Samhain occurs the week before and the week after October 31, so don’t feel too much pressure to practice your rituals on the date if you’ve got other things going on in your life. Here are some magickal practices for those couple of weeks.
Divination
Pull some tarot cards, play with your pendulum, or try some scrying. If you don’t have a scrying mirror or crystal ball, you can fill a dark bowl with water and water scry!
If you decide to light a fire, sit and watch the flames – or even use a candle to practice some pyromancy. You can do the same thing with incense smoke!
Spirit Contact
Spirit contact is really easy during this time of year. Just remember that no matter how you contact the other side, protect yourself first. Protective gemstones, envisioning a golden bubble of protective light around yourself, or carrying some herbs with you will help keep you protected.
One of Morgan’s favorite protective plant allies is black pepper. Yes – the same pepper that’s probably in your pantry right now!
Work with Your Ancestors for Samhain
If you don’t have time or space to set up an ancestor altar, look through old pictures, cook your ancestors’ recipes or favorite foods, watch old home movies, or read old letters. If your ancestors are sh*t, you can tap into your regional ancestors either where you live or your ancestral heritage instead.
Celebrating the Witches’ New Year
If you’re celebrating the Witches’ New Year, which starts at Samhain, you can write down what you don’t want to carry into the new year and burn them. You can also make spiritual goals for yourself for the new year.
This might include things you want to magickally accomplish, such as taking a new witchcraft course, learning about a new divination type, or working with the moon even more.
Remember, store-bought is just fine when it comes to your food and drink for sabbat celebrations. It’s your intention that matters, not necessarily the hard, handmade work. Here are some ideas:
Remember, YOU are the magick. We hope you have an amazing Samhain. It’s such a special season. It’s the season of the witch, after all!
]]>While many fear the ups and downs of eclipse season, understand that eclipse season's purpose is to shake things up in your life so that old ways can be released and new ways can be embraced. Change doesn't occur when things are going smoothly, so eclipse season's ups and downs occur to help bring you in alignment with your true self. It's best to surrender to the flow of eclipse season, rather than fight it, as the energetic flow will lead you to discover new ways of thinking, doing, and living.
Balance is a focus of this Libra New Moon, especially when it comes to your relationships. Where are you giving or taking more in your life or your relationships? Energetic imbalances may be restored with this New Moon, though some may come with a power struggle. Peace and harmony will ultimately prevail, but it could come after some much-needed shadow work and deep healing. The eclipse energy will heighten introspection and the dive within yourself, but it's to help you bring those shadows to light.
Happy New Moon in Libra!
Blessings,
Morgan
Let’s start with the different goddesses who typically wear a veil or whose devotees may want to wear one. This list isn’t exhaustive, and you may feel the urge to veil when working with your deities, no matter what they wear themselves. This also, of course, includes working with gods.
Hestia
Hestia is the Greek goddess of the fire of the hearth and ritual fire. Her Roman counterpart is Vesta. Hestia is one of the 12 Olympians and the first child of the Titans Cronus and Rhea. She’s the goddess who oversees all sacrifices and is known mainly as the goddess of the home and family hearth. However, her reach also extends to civic hearths, and when the public fire in her temple was neglected, it was a failure of duty to the larger community. She’s graceful, kind, and modest, yet undeniably powerful, and the most beloved goddess of the Olympians themselves.
Hera
Hera is often depicted wearing a veil as the goddess of marriage, women, family, and during childbirth. This goddess is more than just a wife, though. She has incredible powers, including weather manipulation, the ability to shape shift, control minds, and even drive people insane if she’s offended enough.
Demeter
Demeter is the divine mother and goddess of cultivation and crops. You’re probably familiar with her story as it relates to Persephone and Hades, but she’s one of the oldest goddesses of the Mediterranean world. She’s a great magician who offers protection, fertility, healing, and prosperity to her devotees who petition her. She’s sometimes portrayed wearing a veil, which is a beautiful way to honor her when working with her.
Leto
Leto is the mother of Apollo and Artemis and is often referred to as The Obscure One or The Hidden One. She was the primary deity of the Anatolian kingdom, Lykia. This was “Wolf Land,” now modern Turkey, and Leto was known to transform into the shape of a wolf when needed. She protects the realms of death and is worshipped as a goddess of families, mothers, and children.
The Cailleach
The Cailleach is the Celtic goddess of winter. She’s a shapeshifter, though often shown as a crone. Her name actually means the Veiled One. She’s considered the maternal ancestor of all Irish men and is said to have formed Scotland’s mountains, so she’s a pretty big deal. While not evil, she has a complex personality and is wild and potentially destructive, like the winters in Ireland and Scotland can be. Her time is said to be from Samhain through Beltane.
Veiling is an incredibly personal choice. Devotees of these and other deities may choose to veil as a spiritual practice to honor them. At the same time, you may choose to veil without working with deities.
Typically, pagan veiling involves covering the head in some way – either part of the hair or all of it. Some witches veil daily, and others do so only when sitting down to practice their magick or complete a ritual intentionally.
While the idea of veiling may be sensitive – some women feel that it’s a sign of oppression, and in some cases, it has been – the choice to do so is thankfully ours here in the US.
Why would a witch want to veil? There’s something special about being able to wear a specific article of clothing or jewelry when working in a spiritual manner. It offers a tangible symbol of the distinction of how you’re using time. When you wear a veil at your altar, it’s magickal time. When you’re not, then it’s not!
I find it nice to veil when I’m feeling particularly susceptible to the energies around me. So, I’ll add a little protection oil to a scarf or bandana and tie it around my head. This gives my Crown Chakra a little extra protection and reminds me that I am the one who gets to decide who’s welcome in my spiritual bubble and who’s not. I also have a hat adorned with specific items and symbols for protection that I’ll wear when I want to keep on the down low.
So, whether you do it in private or public, veiling can take many forms and is truly a beautiful practice to incorporate into your rituals and life.

Mabon heralds the start of autumn, so when it comes to colors, think fall: pumpkins, hay bales, scarecrows. Mabon’s colors include:
Wear a shirt in these tones on Mabon, choose a different color eyeshadow for the day, or wear jewelry in Mabon’s colors, and bam! You’ve got one step done.
When you decorate your altar, even if it’s small, keep it in those colors and incorporate anything you see in the front of your grocery store or craft store this time of year. Fall décor seems to be overflowing on the shelves everywhere, so it’s easy to find what you’re looking for.
Fall leaves – real or fake from your favorite craft store – acorns, pinecones, and other natural elements are perfect for Mabon.
Pumpkins, gourds, apples, and multicolored ears of corn can be found at the grocery store, and are also great for decorating your Mabon altar!
Use fake plants in your décor, too – select them with intention, and you’ll experience the same magick.
Busy Witch Tip: Dollar Tree is one of our favorite places to source inexpensive, reusable altar decorations.
Especially at this time of year, scents might be the easiest way to celebrate Mabon. Everything’s pumpkin spice-scented this time of year, so grab a pumpkin spice candle to bring the smells of autumn and the sabbat to your home. Here are some other scents, herbs, and oils:
You can use wax melts, burn candles, or create a cauldron simmer (simmer pot) in a pot in your kitchen to infuse your home with beautiful scents.
Busy Witch Hack: Purchase a mini crockpot and use it for your simmer pots!
Some of the more traditional gemstones for Mabon include:
Here are some other interesting ones Morgan has found over the years that are great for Mabon:
Carry gemstones in your pocket, wear them as jewelry, or place them on your altar.
Gratitude Jar
A gratitude jar is excellent for any time of year, and especially at Mabon. Just take little slips of paper and write down what you’re grateful for. Place them in the jar, and you can read them later when you need a pick-me-up. Or, save them for Samhain and read them for the Witches’ New Year.
Earth Balance
Because Mabon is all about balance and equal day/night energy, you can go outside, barefoot, and connect with the earth easily. Close your eyes and imagine drawing that grounding energy up through your body. The energy is already balanced on the Autumn Equinox, so it’s nearly effortless to tap into that balanced vibe.
Kitchen Witchery for Mabon
Food is a super easy way to celebrate the sabbat. The following foods a perfect for Mabon celebrations.
Pressed for time? Stop by your grocery store and purchase an apple or pumpkin pie for dinner. It’s all about intention, and busy witches are BUSY! You don’t have to make anything from scratch. Infuse the pie with your intentions as you cut and serve it to your family. Mabon is about gratitude – not about how much you do or what you create from scratch.
A ready-made meal with mashed potatoes or carrots in it also works! Remember, it’s your intention and your magick that count.
Busy Witch Hack: Warm Apple Cider and Pumpkin Spice Lattes count, too!
Blessed Mabon, witches! We’re grateful for you.

This Virgo New Moon wants you to embrace your true self and understand your worth. You may be setting goals that aren't manifesting, so it's time to really look at why that is. Do you feel worthy of achieving your goals? Have you cleared space in your life for the life you want to live? You deserve to achieve your goals, so now's the time to truly believe that.
Other astrological alignments with this New Moon could have your intuition screaming at you right now. Listen to your inner voice and what you are being guided to see. It might be time to clear out things that are keeping you from living the life of your dreams, and this includes limiting beliefs and doubt. Create a fresh start in an area of your life if the energy is just too stagnant. Take some time to look into the future at the life you want to be living, and put some long-term plans in motion to get you there.
Blessings,
Morgan
As with any form of magickal practice, you get to decide what feels good to you, so as you read the following tips, listen to your intuition and choose what works best for your family.
Our ancestors love to be around us, so choose an altar space in a central location in your home. The entryway, fireplace, and kitchen are great places for an ancestor altar. Consider your ancestors’ professions or hobbies when choosing where to place the altar. Honor an ancestor who loved cooking in your dining room, for instance. A shelf altar is an excellent alternative if you’re short on space. Just make sure you’ve got enough room for your ancestors’ items or pictures and any other objects you’d like to include.
When choosing items and objects for your ancestor altar, you may be limited in your choice due to availability. That’s OK! The best objects for an ancestor altar are those that resonate with you and your loved ones. Here are some ideas:
Then, add a few items listed below to complete your altar.
One of the easiest ways to enhance an ancestor altar is to grab some candles. Carve your ancestors’ names into candles or select a scent for a particular ancestor. For instance, if your grandmother loved jasmine, choosing a jasmine candle for her altar would be perfect.
Below are some candle colors that align with ancestor magick. In a pinch, remember that a white candle can be used for any purpose.
If you’d like to include herbs in your ancestor altar, here are a few that will enhance your magick.
Gemstones are another easy way to honor your ancestors. Below are a few ideas for helping you connect with those who have gone before you.
You can also work with your ancestors’ specific birthstones as well. Wear or carry them with you to remind you of the beautiful legacy from which you come.
Remember, YOU are the magick, so follow your intuition and heart as you set up an ancestor altar this year.
]]>Before we get into it…
Some of us don’t come from the healthiest families, and it may feel wrong to honor harmful ancestors. The good news is you don’t have to communicate or revere all of your ancestors. You can pick and choose who you work with for your greatest good.
For instance, if a great uncle was a positive paternal figure in your early childhood, you can choose to communicate with him rather than your own father. Likewise, if you don’t have any connections with your ancestors, you can honor your genetic heritage and practice the rituals and traditions of your likely predecessors.
You can also call on your spiritual ancestors – teachers, saints, and guides who have played a part in your spiritual “upbringing” and development. You have more ancestors than you may realize.
It’s no secret we love kitchen witchery at IGC, so cooking with our ancestors is one of our favorite practices. You can pull out a recipe from your family member’s collection and prepare it in your kitchen. As you do, you can open a channel to that ancestor and seek their guidance in cooking the meal.
Another way to honor your ancestors in the kitchen is to brew their favorite tea or purchase their favorite ice cream. Enjoy the treat and send gratitude to that ancestor as you do.
Do you have a piece of jewelry or clothing that belonged to a beloved grandparent? Wearing that item can help bring them closer to you. Wear your grandfather’s tie pin for good luck and divine masculine energies at an interview. Carry your grandmother’s coin purse in your handbag for abundance.
Of course, an ancestor altar is a great way to revere those who came before you. It can be as simple as a picture of the ancestor with a candle in the corner of your living room, or as elaborate as a long table with dozens of photographs and items from your ancestors on it.
You can also set a place for your ancestors at family dinner tables during holidays and special events. Including your ancestors by designating a physical location for them is a special way to honor their legacy.
A unique way to connect with your ancestors is to go for a walk with them. Spend the time chatting with them, asking them if they need support, and asking for guidance when needed. Remember, your relationship with your ancestors can be alive and vibrant, even though they are on the other side.
]]>With 6 planets in retrograde when this Full Moon arrives, the energy surrounding us is anything but stable. While Virgo season does provide some stability within the chaos, there is still an air of uncertainty that accompanies this Pisces Full Moon. Heightened emotions are a definite factor during this moon, especially with Mercury Retrograde affecting communication. You might find that you are unable to clearly convey how you are feeling, which could lead to frustration and breakdowns. Within all this chaos, it's best to look inward for peace, calm, and guidance on how to proceed next.
This Supermoon in Pisces could also reveal the bigger picture to you, helping to distract you some from the attention-to-detail energy that Virgo season has brought. As Blue Moons don't happen very often, combined with how Pisces energy focuses more on bigger dreams and goals, this Full Moon is a great time to put your energy out there for how you want your life to be on a grand scale. Open yourself to possible transformations that need to happen in order for you to get there, which could include an ending to make room for something bigger in your life to arrive. With this ending comes healing, so keep your mind and energy focused on that.
Blessings,
Morgan
