Saturn Return with Cardsy B: Why Everything Falls Apart in Your Late 20s
If your late 20s felt like your entire life got picked up, shaken hard, and set back down in a completely different configuration, there's a name for that. It's called your Saturn Return. And it's not punishment. It's a reckoning.
In this episode, I sat down with Cardsy B, author, intuitive tarot reader, and the Wellness Witch in Residence at New York City's Algonquin Hotel. She literally wrote the book on Saturn Returns, and I mean that literally. Her book The Saturn Diaries is part memoir, part grimoire, part spellbook. We talked about what Saturn Returns actually are, why they hit so hard, and what comes out the other side.
So What is a Saturn Return?
Every 27 to 31 years, Saturn literally returns to the exact position it was in when you were born. Your first return hits in your late 20s to early 30s. Your second comes in your late 50s to early 60s. If you're lucky enough to get a third, you're in your 80s or 90s territory, Betty White style.
Saturn is the disciplinarian of the planetary system. It brings structure, rules, and a very pointed spotlight on anything in your life that isn't aligned. As Cardsy B puts it, it's like the mean professor you learn the most from. And during a return, if you've been building your life on shaky ground, you're going to find out about it.
Jobs fall away. Relationships end. Identities crumble. Saturn is essentially asking: who are you without all the things you've been using to define yourself?
Two Women, Two Rock Bottoms
Both Cardsy B and I went through our Saturn Returns without knowing what was happening, and looking back, it explained everything.
For Cardsy B, it arrived all at once. Her high-profile creative director role at Playboy was pulled out from under her. Her marriage ended. Her best friend passed away. Everything she used to introduce herself was suddenly gone. At her lowest point she was living in a Chinatown apartment with rats and cockroaches, keeping her Instagram looking polished and Carrie Bradshaw-esque while privately duct-taping her life together. She's open in her book about how dark it got, including the moment she nearly didn't make it through.
For me, it was the three years I walked away from my marriage, shut down my business, and had no idea who I was anymore. I ended up in a 900 square foot apartment with my sister, two kids, off the dating apps, just sitting with the wreckage of a life I'd built and taken apart with my own hands. It was in that stillness that I started listening again, to my spirituality, my intuition, my witchy self that I'd completely abandoned. Those were the first bricks I put back into place.
Neither of us knew it was Saturn at the time. We just knew everything was falling apart.
Why It Hits So Hard the First Time
According to Cardsy B, the intensity of your first Saturn Return often depends on how willing you are to listen. The harder you resist what Saturn is trying to show you, the harder it pushes. She uses Madonna as an example: on top of the world in her late 20s, resistant to any course correction, and then hit much harder in her second return decades later. If you learn the lessons in the first one, the others tend to be less brutal.
The structures that fall during a Saturn Return are usually the ones you've been propping up without examining. Careers you stayed in for the paycheck but hated. Relationships that looked good on paper. Identities built around titles, partners, or social circles that were never really yours to begin with.
What Comes Out the Other Side
This is the part that matters.
Cardsy B went from choosing Pantone shades for bikinis at a global fashion brand to being a full-time intuitive tarot reader, author, and wellness witch working with clients from every walk of life, including names that would make your jaw drop. She describes it as the work she was actually here to do.
I reconciled with my husband, moved to Arizona, opened Inked Goddess Creations, and built something I'm genuinely proud of. My witchcraft came back, deeper than it ever was before. And knowing what it felt like to walk away from that part of myself, I will never do it again.
Neither of us would trade what we went through to get here.
A Few Things Worth Knowing
You can find out when your Saturn Return is with a quick Google search for "Saturn Return calculator." All you need is your birth date.
Saturn recently moved into Aries, so even if you're not in a return period right now, you may still be feeling structural shifts, especially if you have strong Aries placements in your chart.
And if you're in the thick of a Saturn Return right now and it feels unsurvivable? It's not. The tower has to fall so something sturdier can be built. You just can't see that from inside the rubble.
Where to Find Cardsy B
Cardsy B's book The Saturn Diaries is available wherever books are sold and on her website. She also hosts the Hex and the City podcast, a weekly 30-minute cosmic weather report that I personally listen to every Monday morning on my walk.
