Do’s and Don’ts of Spirit Communication

Do’s and Don’ts of Spirit Communication

Spirit communication can be tricky and, if you’re not prepared, it can get scary. However, we believe that spirit communication is a great practice for witches of all persuasions. So, to help you open pathways of communication with the spirit realm, here are some good rules to follow.

We’re not ones to tell you what to do, but we highly recommend the following do’s and don’ts when chatting with ghosts.

Do Ask Permission to Investigate

Ask permission from the spirits AND the property owners before you investigate. Good manners go a long way with the living and the dead. Plus, a trespassing charge isn’t fun for anyone.

Don’t Give a Spirit Permission to Stay

Do you want ghosts waking you up in the middle of the night? Because this is how you get ghosts waking you up in the middle of the night! Don’t ever give a spirit permission to stay. We’ve all seen “Annabelle.”

Do Set Specific Boundaries for Your Wanted Spirits

With the previous “don’t” in mind, you can make your home hospitable to spirits you want to connect with. Protect your home and set the intention that only spirits with positive intent are welcome. It’s a good way to keep in touch with your ancestors in the spirit realm without opening yourself up to poltergeists.

Don’t Try to Force Spirits to Move On

Like, maybe they’re happy there?! Especially if you’re communicating with a spirit in a public place, like on a ghost tour, leave them alone. You can put boundaries in place and protect yourself from their influence, but if a spirit is just hanging out, let them. When you try to force your will on a spirit, it might backfire on you.

Do Wear Minimal Scents

Ok, this one sounds a little odd, but sometimes spirits will communicate with or carry a specific smell. This could be flowers or an aftershave scent, or something more like cigars or tobacco. If you’re wearing something with a strong scent, you might miss smells coming from the spirit realm.

Don’t Provoke the Spirits

I don’t care what a certain Zak does for TV; don’t pick fights with ghosts. Don’t provoke the spirits. If you wouldn’t start a fight with a stranger on the street, don’t do it to spirits. You might get bitch slapped. And honestly, I get it.

Do Protect Yourself Before a Session

Whether you cast a circle, wear some Black Tourmaline, or ask your spirits or goddesses to protect you while you open a channel of communication with the spirit realm, do something to protect yourself. I keep a little bottle of Florida Water in my purse to spray around myself if I’ve been in a haunted location…even if I haven’t been actively communicating with the spirits there.

Don’t Be Scared to Try

Finally, don’t be scared to try spirit communication if you’re feeling called to it. Just protect yourself first and remember that you can end the communication as soon as you feel uncomfortable. A simple “this session is done” will close it off. Start slow and see how you like it!

Happy spirit communicating, witches!
