There's something about these Silver Sheen Obsidian carvings! We've carried several in our shop, but none have been as mysterious and alluring as the Nine-Tailed Fox!
The Nine-Tailed Fox, or Kitsune, is one of Japanese folklore's most interesting shapeshifters: a fox spirit ascribed intelligence and magickal power, especially the long-living ones. A fox only earns its extra tails after a century of living, and one, five, seven, and nine are the tail counts that show up again and again in the old stories.
Nine tails mark the oldest, most potent version of the creature, tied straight back to the golden-furred fox of Chinese legend. The most infamous of these vixens is Tamamo no Mae, said to be the same shapeshifting fox spirit who brought down the Yin/Shang dynasty in China roughly two thousand years earlier, before resurfacing in Japan to bewitch an emperor.
Kitsune aren't just tricksters, either. They're wrapped up in the worship of Inari, the Shinto deity of rice, serving as messengers and guardian figures believed to ward off evil. Beauty, danger, longevity, and shapeshifting power all coil together in one tail after another. It's easy to see why she's become shorthand for the kind of magick that's ancient, feminine, and not remotely safe.
