The Feral Witch's Guide to Intentional Rest

The Feral Witch's Guide to Intentional Rest

You've heard "you can't pour from an empty cup" a thousand times, and you probably kept right on pouring anyway.

People ask me all the time how I get everything done. The answer is simple: when I work, I work 110%. And when I rest, I rest 110%. Both are completely intentional, and here's how I do the resting part.

Your Energy Is Your Life Force

Your ability to perform magick is tied directly to your energy. If your spells keep flopping, look at your energy first. When you cast from a drained place, that drained energy is what goes into your spell.

I saw this first in my business, as well as this one. When I was burned out, sales dropped. When I was high energy, we made more money, and I connected with people more. So I made three commitments to my energy: respect it, protect it, and nurture it. Above everything else.

If you're running on empty, you're casting on empty. Rest is how you refill your magickal energy.

Rest as Rebellion

I come from the hustle generation, where your worth was tied to your work and exhaustion was a badge of honor. Undoing that conditioning took burning out over and over before I realized that rest is how I expand.

Now, when that voice in my head says "if you're not working, you're not worth anything," I tell it to shut the fuck up by resting. Very Aquarius-coded of me. And remember: rested witches are harder to control.

Thresholds: Closing the Shop

Thresholds are liminal spaces, and the shift from work to rest can be one too. Mine is my clothes. If I'm going to work more that evening, the work clothes stay on. When I'm done for the day, they come off, and the fuzzy pants go on. I've done this so consistently that when hustle culture whispers "go do one more thing," my brain answers, "Nope, I'm in pajamas."

Working from home? Try closing your laptop or office door, lighting a candle when work starts and blowing it out when it ends, or saying a closing phrase as you cross into rest. The more you do it, the more it becomes a ritual.

Build Your Rest Tiers

Rest comes in levels. My quick recharge is meditation, grounding outside, or a favorite playlist. Next up is functional trash TV, like baking and renovation shows. At the top is full cozy mode: wrapped in a fuzzy blanket, favorite mist in the air, snacks beside me, and a survival show like Alone on the screen.

Define your own tiers so that when you're depleted, you don't have to think. Just check the menu and find the level that feels like relief.

The Power of Stillness

Your intuition lives in the stillness. When your brain is spinning through your to-do list, messages have nowhere to come in. So many of our subscription box themes have dropped in during meditation, and I once had an entire year of coven curriculum arrive while watching trash TV. When you stop pushing, your system opens up.

Enchanting the Ordinary

Intention is what makes magick magick, and you don't need a two-hour ritual to live magickally. Stir your tea clockwise while calling in calm. Consecrate a mist as your personal rest signal. Enchant your blanket with nurturing energy. Bless your snacks. None of this requires special tools; you're the one giving these things meaning. Repetition builds the spell.

Protect Your Rest

Your phone is a huge energy leak. Curate your feed by unfollowing anyone who drains you, including the person you hate-follow. Set Do Not Disturb overnight so only your people can get through. Other people's urgency doesn't automatically become your emergency.

And ask yourself where your energy is leaking during rest. Lying in bed doomscrolling with your laptop open won't recharge you.

My Current Rest Favorites

A few enhancements I'm loving right now: Lavender Chamomile tea from Bigelow, a smoky amethyst elestial I lay on my forehead for grounding, a rainbow moonstone palm stone for stress relief, and the Baking Up a Magical Life series by Jessica Rosenberg.

Routines as Bookends

My mornings start with movement, a protein-heavy breakfast, and meditation. My evenings mean no phone in bed, a few pages of a book, and lights out around nine. Routines are spells you cast daily, so start small: one anchor in the morning and one at night.

When you're at work, work. When you're home, rest. Holy shit, rest.
