What is a Coven?
A few words related to witchcraft are met with mixed feelings. “Coven” is one of them. It brings Hollywood depictions to mind and feels like a rigid, super-formal way to practice. However, that’s not always the case! So, we thought it would be a good idea to answer your most pressing questions about covens and give you an idea of what it’s like to be a member of our coven, the Inked Spirit Coven. Let’s start with the most common question…
What is a Coven?
Quite simply, a coven is a group of witches working and practicing magick together. There’s no one correct way to create a coven; the most important feature is that it meets regularly. This can be in-person, online, or hybrid, with some members in a shared space together and others joining via Zoom. Covens are best when they have an egalitarian approach to magick, where no one is above anyone else.
Do You Have to be Wiccan to be in a Coven?
You do not have to be Wiccan to be in a coven; however, it’s up to the individual coven to make those rules. Some covens open their doors to visitors interested in their work, while others remain for Wiccans only. While there are covens led by a priest or priestess, this isn’t a requirement either. It’s just a good idea for the leader to have essential magickal knowledge and a few years of experience in witchcraft.
How to Find a Coven?
Finding a coven can be as simple as doing a Google search. You don’t want to stop there, though. Do some research into the coven and what it offers. You should understand the membership requirements and the benefits you can expect by joining them. Online covens typically outline all membership features, including information about leadership and their background.
And be sure the coven you join is led by a human guide. There are several online options that are community-led in such a way that there's no one moderating the content or vetting the information being shared. You want to make sure you're practicing with credible leaders.
What are the Benefits of an Online Coven?
Online covens are great for solitary witches who still desire interaction with other practitioners. Some online covens, like the Inked Spirit Coven, offer the opportunity to join workshops and rituals live or watch the replay of these events so you can practice in your own time. You also develop friendships across the nation and potentially in other parts of the world when you join an online coven. How cool would it be to know that a coven sister is in the town you’re visiting soon?
What’s Inside the Inked Spirit Coven?
In addition to the supportive and magickal community of the Inked Spirit Coven, members receive a monthly downloadable workbook with magickal correspondences for the month, journal prompts, mini spells or rituals, and more to help them practice. They also receive monthly lessons and workshops focused on real witchcraft practices and ideas. Our theme for 2024 is Rewilding Your Inner Witch, and it’s been a transformational experience for members!
