Making Magick with Mundane Household Items

Making Magick with Mundane Household Items

Despite what social media may portray, your magickal practice does not have to be elaborate to be effective. Remember, YOU are the magick, and your intention is the strongest part of your practice. You don’t need any fancy tools either. Here are some Cottage Witch-inspired ideas to help you transform mundane household items into magickal ones!

Use Pantry Items for a Kitchen Floor Wash

Combine some of the ingredients in your pantry to physically clean and spiritually purify your floors. There are several recipes out there, but we love the following mixture for tile, concrete, or stone floors (vinegar and lemon can lighten wood stain – so consider leaving those out):

  •         2 cups water
  •         1 cup white vinegar
  •         Rind & juice of 2 lemons
  •         ½ cup dried chamomile
  •         ½ cup whole cloves
  •         1 cup dried rosemary
  •         1 cup dried sage

You can add it to your regular cleaner or use it as the final step in your cleaning process.

Keep Your Eggshells

Next time you’re at the craft store, pick up a package of candle wicks to keep on hand to make your own eggshell candles. Rinse out and keep a few eggshells from your cooking when you have a candle that’s reaching its end. Light the candle and allow the wax to melt nearly to the bottom. Then, carefully pour the wax into the eggshells (we recommend using an oven mitt, as the container may be hot!). Add a short wick to each eggshell candle and allow them to cool to room temperature. You can use these candles as part of a centerpiece or during a Sabbat ritual.

Eggshells are also great for your garden, so instead of tossing them when you cook, step outside and crumble some around your favorite flowers or herbs.

Make a Sugar Scrub

If your skin tends to feel dry and itchy, a sugar scrub might make you feel better! Combine ½ cup of coconut oil with ¼ cup of sugar and stir it up in a bowl. Add fresh citrus zest or your favorite essential oil to the scrub and store in an airtight container.

Consider using an essential oil that corresponds with a favorite magickal intention. Rose or jasmine oil is great for love magick. Use eucalyptus oil for healing or tea tree oil for protection. Peppermint is great if you plan to use your scrub in the morning – it’ll wake you right up! Plus, it may help attract money.

Note: Please be careful moving about the shower or bathtub while using your sugar scrub. Any oil gets very slippery on hard surfaces, and we don’t want you to fall.

Save Those Lemon Peels, Too

If lemon is one of your favorite ingredients, don’t throw those peels out! Add them to a pot of water on the stove with sliced orange, cloves, or fresh mint. Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer to allow the purifying essence of the lemon to fill your space.

Use Your Utensils

Did you know your kitchen utensils can serve as magickal tools too? Spoons can be used as wands while you cook, directing your energy into the dish you’re preparing. Use knives to cut away negative energy or to cut sigils into your vegetables before chopping them up. You can even charge your electronic mixers and food processors with an intention before using them to whip some magick right into your recipe.

Altars Everywhere

Create small altars throughout your home to honor your favorite deities, your ancestors, or your intentions. Set up a small money altar in your home office or a self-love altar in your bathroom so you can see it while getting ready for the day. A sex magick altar is great in the bedroom, while a family altar can actually be set up on the living room wall by hanging your ancestors’ pictures and mementos.

What’s your favorite household item to use in your practice?
