Crystal Shapes & Their Magickal Benefits
From raw stones, hearts, and towers, to tumbled stones, spheres, and more, crystal cuts and shapes seem endless. So, while you might be drawn to rose quartz, picking its shape and cut might seem confusing. That’s why we’ve created this handy guide to help you determine which options are best for the work you want to do.
Raw stones are rough, natural, and organic. They help you connect with the earth’s energies and can be quite grounding. Some witches prefer using raw crystals, rather than polished ones, during meditation due to their natural, relatively untouched qualities. If your raw gemstone has a termination point, it’s likely there by nature and not by human manipulation. The energy of these crystals can be strong, so if you need a little boost, consider adding a raw stone to your collection.
Tumbled stones often give off gentler energy and are more “user friendly” when it comes to carrying them in your pocket or – let’s be honest – your bra! When a gemstone is tumbled, the corners become rounder and softer. Not only do they feel comfortable in your hand, but the details inside the crystal also become more defined.
If you want to release energy throughout your space, a sphere is a great choice. Spherical crystals help “smooth” the energy of a room, calming any chaos there. Crystal spheres are also excellent tools for divination work. You can even use a crystal ball to release stress in a massage. It can help soothe physical tension while you enjoy the stone’s metaphysical benefits.
Egg-shaped gemstones symbolize new beginnings, fertility, and rebirth. Eggs fit comfortably in the palm of your hand and are often quite substantial. Not only are the great for Ostara celebrations, but egg-shaped crystals can also help ground you in meditation sessions.
Seer or Window Stones
Crystals that have a frosted look on all but one side are called seer, scrying, or window stones. The cut and polished side of the crystal is called the window. Seer stones are perfect for scrying work and are generally crafted from quartz: amethyst, rose, clear, or smoky quartz. To use one, sit in a comfortable spot where you won’t be disturbed. Light a candle and then gaze gently into the crystal’s window and see what images come into view. Remain in this meditative state for as long as you are comfortable.
Towers are carved so that they have a flat base and a pointed end. This pointed end is called a termination, or generator, point. If you want to add a powerful boost of energy to your altar, consider a tower. Gemstone towers draw energy down from the universe and spread it throughout the room. As generators, towers also amplify the energy of other gemstones nearby.
Like towers, a crystal cut in a pyramid shape will draw energy from the heavens and direct it out through the four corners of its base. Pyramids are weighty and grounded, which makes them a great stabilizing addition to the center of your altar. If you’re feeling lethargic, turn to your pyramid for a magickal boost of energy.
Heart-shaped gemstones are often small enough to carry with you. When placed in your pocket, a heart becomes a magickal fidget toy that can bring a calming element to your day. Stones cut in a heart shape resonate with the heart chakra, and their smooth texture makes them soothing to rub with your thumb. Hearts help draw love and compassion. They are also reminders of our ability to heal from emotional wounds and can bring balance to our relationships.
Wands are perfect for channeling energy either in meditation or in healing sessions. Depending on the stone they are carved from, wands can direct energy, create a protective barrier, or inspire creativity. Some Reiki practitioners use wands to focus healing energy. While you may not want to use a rougher wand to massage tired muscles, a smooth, polished version can help work the kinks out of tired feet or sore shoulders.
No matter what crystal shape you choose, remember the way you use it is up to you.
